Why Does XP Call Itself "Version 2002"?

Postby MajorSky17 » January 1st, 2018, 2:49 pm

I've never really understood this, even after following the development process for the videos. It hasn't happened with a Windows release before or since, but for some reason, in Windows XP, there is a line in the system properties dialog box that says it is "Version 2002". It was this way in RTM (released in October 2001, so therefore surely "Version 2001"?), through all Service Packs and even after Service Pack 3 is installed (surely then "Version 2008"?). My question is...why? :?

The only difference I am aware of is in Windows XP x64, which reports "Version 2003":

P.S. Here's a link to a similar thread to this at BetaArchive.

We don't know at this point why XP was called "Version 2002" but maybe MS thought that it will be appropriate to be called Version 2002 becuase of Beta 2 and Pre-RC1 Builds on the boot screen refer Windows XP version 2002 which was removed in later builds of XP
